butter-in-coffee-coffee-trends Pour-overs, nitro coffee, coffee soda – it seems like there’s always some hot new trend going on in the coffee world. If you’re a creature of habit, you may be left wondering, “What’s wrong with good, old-fashioned drip coffee?” And we’re with you, to a certain extent. We’re big fans of the classic morning ritual: a delicious cup of high-quality coffee, served piping hot. Then again, there’s something to be said for having a sense of adventure.

When It Comes to Coffee, Butter Is In

If you keep up on the latest news in the coffee world, then you’ve probably heard about people putting butter in coffee. It sounds strange, even to those who prefer their coffee with a healthy splash of cream. But people all over are swearing by buttered coffee. So what’s behind this new coffee trend?

Dave Asprey’s Bold Ideas

Our story starts with a guy named Dave Asprey. Dave is an entrepreneur, but lately he’s been garnering attention for his activities as a biohacker: someone who uses science and tech to boost bodily function. He’s the founder of bulletproofexec.com, a website devoted to the biohacking movement. And while some of Dave’s health claims are sure to raise eyebrows, it’s hard to argue with his results. He used to weigh 300 lbs, though looking at him now, you’d never know that to be the case. He also claims to have boosted his own IQ by 12 points. Anyway, back to the coffee. Dave discovered that by adding butter to his coffee, he was able to create a brain-boosting breakfast substitute with enough essential fats to keep him going for six hours or more. He dubbed the stuff “bulletproof coffee,” and it’s been catching on in a major way ever since.

DIY Butter in Coffee

coffee-butter-in-blenderIf that sounds appealing, then you may be thinking about tossing some butter into your own coffee tomorrow morning. But it’s not quite that simple. First, you want to start with good quality coffee. Second, you’ll need to use the right kind of butter. A dollop of margarine isn’t going to do the trick. Instead, use unsalted, grass-fed butter. The amount of butter you use is up to you. Start with a teaspoon per cup. If you’re really hungry, add a bit more. Asprey also sells a product called Brain Octane Oil, which is designed to boost brain performance and re-balance the yeast in the gut. If you’d like, you can add some of that into your blend as well.

Fire Up the Blender

The next step is to blend your coffee and butter together. Yes, it’s an extra step, but the experts say the blender is key for optimum results. The resulting drink is rich, creamy, and full of brain-boosting caffeine and healthy fats.
