The coffee is separated into fraction pack bags which are pre-portioned to make one pot of coffee each. You would still need a filter if you are using a standard drip coffee machine. Separating the bags into the fraction packs is done to help keep the coffee as fresh as possible, so as not to compromise the flavor by having the majority of the grounds exposed to oxygen, moisture and light, which will degrade the quality over time.
