Every morning you do the Frankenstein walk to the kitchen. Still semi-conscious, you reach up into the cupboard and grab your favorite K-Cup Pod.

As you fill your mug, your eyes are fixed on the slow, teasing stream of dark coffee pouring from my Keurig brewer. Soon the energizing elixir is ready to be enjoyed. You may add milk, sugar, then sip. Viola!

The caffeine in the K-Cup Pods jolts your senses, and you're ready to take on the world. However, as we have come to find out, when it comes to caffeine in K-cups, not all are created equal. Depending on the brew you’re putting into your Keurig maker, the caffeine amount can vary greatly. Personally, I like a good caffeine jolt to kick-start my day.

While some of the bolder blends are a bit too complex for my taste, some of the milder blends just don’t have the deep flavor I like. That’s why when I choose my K-Cup blend, I take a few things into consideration.

The Facts about Caffeine in K-Cups

The standard cup of coffee has 120 mg of caffeine in an 8 fl oz cup. However, an 8 oz cup of coffee from a standard 2 oz K-Cup contains between 100-140 mg of caffeine. Most K-Cups consist of 2 tablespoons of ground coffee which equals 2 ounces of coffee.

Which one is right for you? It really depends on how much caffeine you prefer and the type of flavor you like in your coffee. Your best option is to go to your local coffee shop and experiment with different kinds. Once you find the one you like, purchase it in bulk packages of K-Cup Coffee.

No matter what your preferences is, there’s no denying that the caffeine in K-Cup Coffee is a huge part of why we love coffee so much. In fact, caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world. It enhances our alertness and decreases sleepiness: two things we all need in the midst of our busy days.

  • The length of brew time has a big impact on caffeine too. It takes my Keurig less than 1 minute to brew a 10 ounce cup of coffee (once the water reaches temperature and starts flowing through the K-cup). This is much less time for caffeine extraction vs. an automatic drip brewer or a pour-over.
