Spring 2012: Allison Wood, New York University

Congratulations to Allison Wood, winner of the Spring 2012 'Hit the Books' Scholarship!

Congratulations, Allison!

Allison wrote us a letter regarding her award:

To the Scholarship Committee,

I am honored to be chosen as the recipient of CoffeeForLess’ most recent scholarship. I moved to New York last fall to start a Master’s in Public Administration degree at New York University. Before moving to New York, I taught in a vocational training program in Seattle, providing hands-on culinary instruction and running job readiness cafes. I intend to continue to work in public service, and am focusing my degree on nonprofit and public financial management. Outside of the classroom, I’m tutoring my peers in financial management, volunteering on the board of my university’s microfinance association, and working part-time for a multilateral social services agency in Brooklyn. This scholarship comes at the perfect time and gives me a huge sense of relief as school-related expenses continue to grow. The award will directly offset all of the expenses I’ve already accrued this semester, and will allow me to breathe easy knowing that studying can be that much less stressful for the time being. I look forward to another year of school, and to a vibrant career in public service, working on issues surrounding poverty alleviation and urban revitalization. I am deeply grateful for this award, and look forward to paying it back to the community through my work in the future.

Sincerely,

Allison Wood
